Hampshire begin their Group 2 campaign having assembled what could prove the most exciting partnership to open the bowling in the entire County Championship this season. South African fast bowler and long-standing Hampshire servant Kyle Abbott returns to the club after travel restrictions prevented him from coming over in 2020 and he is joined by Pakistan Test bowler Mohammad Abbas, who enjoyed successful spells at Leicestershire in 2018 and 2019. Liam Dawson and Mason Crane both provide spin bowing options, with the latter having been on tour with England in the Subcontinent over the winter. The Hampshire batting still contains question marks, with much depending once again on the form of county cricket run machines James Vince and Sam Northeast.

Leicestershire’s young side coached by Foxes legend Paul Nixon showed flashes of quality last season in the Bob Willis Trophy, most notably their beating of Lancashire by seven wickets. Batsman Rishi Patel, all-rounder Scott Steel and bowler Ed Barnes have all joined the club from Essex, Durham and Yorkshire. However, the hosts will be without marquee overseas signing Marcus Harris with the Australian opener set to join up with the side later in the month. Harris’ absence may prove crucial here with Leicestershire’s batsman likely to struggle vs Abbott and Abbas. Ultimately, such quality within their bowling means that Hampshire have to be favoured to win at the Uptonsteel County Ground, although if the Foxes can dismiss Vince and Northeast early on in their respective innings, then they will give themselves a fighting chance.
