THE PREDICTION

Lancashire failed to recover from their beating at the hands of Leicestershire in their opening red ball match of last season and could not establish themselves as serious contenders for the Bob Willis Trophy. They have since strengthened according in preparation for 2021, signing Luke Wells from opponents Sussex to bolster the batting, whilst pace bowler Jackson Bird arrives as an overseas player to replace the retired Graham Onions although Bird won’t feature in this match. Sussex finished rock-bottom of the Bob Willis Trophy South Group last year with just one win and four defeats from their five first-class games. Since then, coach Jason Gillespie has left the county, with James Kirtley and Ian Salisbury taking the reins for this season.

Much for Sussex here will depend on the potency of right-arm fast-medium bowler Ollie Robinson, who has been tipped for England duty in the future. Opening batsman Phil Salt will look to carry on his form from last season into this match which saw him hit three half-centuries in red ball cricket last season, although he will miss this match through injury. Ultimately, Lancashire even without the services of Bird or England internationals Jos Buttler and Liam Livingston boast an all-round stronger side than Sussex. Therefore, the ‘Red Rose’ are expected to come out on top in a match originally scheduled to take place at Hove, but was switched to Old Trafford due to a bug infestation.
