WHAT ARE FREE BETS?
Free bets can vary across bookmakers but in most cases they are a reward given to either new or existing customers in exchange for loyalty. Bookmakers tend to offer free bets as an incentive to attract new customers but savvy punters can use these to their advantage and profit from them.
In order to be eligible for a free bet, new customers will typically need to make a ‘qualifying bet’. This will usually require making a deposit into your account on the bookmaker’s website and making a minimum bet (often £5 or £10). Once this qualifying bet has been settled, free bets – the amount of which varies from offer to offer – will appear in the customer’s account shortly after. There may be certain criteria attached to these free bets, such as an expiry date they need to be used by, so be sure to check the terms and conditions attached to the offer.
Additionally, free bets are sometimes handed out to existing customers, and this can be for a variety of reasons. Some bookmakers release free bets when the customer bets a certain amount each week/month, while others will offer them as an incentive to return. Additionally, bookmakers occasionally give out free bets for certain sporting events, such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup or the Grand National. Existing customers should check the offers section of bookmakers' websites regularly.
HOW DOES A FREE BET WORK?
There are two key differences between an ordinary bet and a free bet:
- With a free bet, the customer does not use any of their own money as the free bet is given to the customer by the bookmaker. Therefore, even if the bet loses, the customer does not lose any money!
- If the free bet wins, the customer is credited with the winnings, but not the original stake. For example, if a customer uses a £5 free bet on Chelsea to win at 2/1, they would have £10 credited into their account, not £15 as would be the case in an ordinary bet (the £10 winnings plus the original £5 stake).
WHAT OTHER OFFERS ARE AVAILABLE?
Free bets are not only one way in which bookmakers entice customers as other ‘bonuses’ can often form part of a welcome offer. For example, in addition to free bets, the customer may also be given credits to use on the bookmakers’ online casino or games section. Again, it is important to read the criteria carefully before signing up so that you know exactly what you’re getting and how to take advantage of it.
WHAT ARE ENHANCED OFFERS?
Occasionally, a bookmaker may introduce an enhanced welcome offer ahead of a particular sporting event. These typically offer a higher volume of free bets compared to standard welcome packages, and are available for a limited time only. Be sure to regularly check this page as we will make updates as and when new offers are available.
