The Lowdown

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Djokovic enjoyed a comfortable first round as he defeated Donald Young in straight sets in what was his first competitive match since Wimbledon.
  • The Serb dominates the career head-to-head with Monfils, winning all 14 of their previous meetings with the most recent being in Eastbourne last year.

GAEL MONFILS

  • The enigmatic Frenchman was tested in his first round encounter with Jaume Munar but ultimately came through in straight sets to continue his perfect start to 2018.
  • Monfils collected the Qatar Open trophy in early January and whilst he has failed to topple Djokovic in their previous clashes, he may feel that this is as good a chance as any with his opponent returning from a long-term injury.

The Statistics

The Prediction

In perhaps the standout match of the men's singles so far, the recently returned Novak Djokovic faces off against the highly entertaining Gael Monfils. The Frenchman can be brilliant at times with his shot-making abilities and has started the year in excellent fashion, but his inconsistency has prevented him from reaching the very top in his career. The one-sided head-to-head score between the two perhaps doesn't tell the full story as many of those encounters have been close-fought affairs, and another is expected here with Djokovic just favoured to take this in four or possibly five sets.
