THE TEAM NEWS

AUSTRALIA

Captain: Aaron Finch

  • Australia were hammered last Sunday in the first one day international as South Africa bowled them out for just 152 and chased it down in only 29.2 overs and they are now in the middle of their longest losing record in ODIs having lost their last seven.

  • Changes are likely to be made to switch things around a little and the top three may see changes given the fact they were three wickets down with just eight runs on the board so there is a chance Shaun Marsh will return from injury and come in at number three at the expense of D’Arcy Short.

  • Mitchell Starc was bizarrely held to first change rather than opening the bowling with the new ball but that will surely change here to have their premier fast bowler opening up, while Adam Zampa could also come in for one of the pacemen, with the Aussies likely to favour batting second here.

SOUTH AFRICA

Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • South Africa were understandably delighted with the comprehensive victory in the opening ODI and they will be keen to keep their foot on the throttle and not allow the home side an easy way back into this series.

  • This was a complete performance in all facets of the game so it seems highly likely that they will name the same eleven players for this match with there being little reason to change things around especially given the rest between matches.

  • The bowling attack looked to be in outstanding form in the first ODI and they will look to develop a further psychological edge over the Aussie batsmen, and they will not be perturbed whether they win or lose the toss, and whether they bat or bowl first.

THE PREDICTION

The ruthlessness shown by the tourists in the opening ODI showed they mean serious business in this series, and that is ominous for an Australia team that is badly lacking in confidence and self-belief right now. The batting line-up especially looks incredibly vulnerable and it is difficult to have confidence whether they are batting first or chasing a total at the moment given their fragile mentality. South Africa’s batting was not fully tested in that opening match and that will be a focus for the Australians to try and find some chinks in their armour there, but the South African bowling attack have to be favoured once again to take this game away from the hosts and inflict an eighth consecutive ODI defeat.
