THE LOWDOWN

ROGER FEDERER

  • Federer bounced back from his defeat to Kei Nishikori by cutting out the errors as he beat Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday to keep his qualification hopes alive.
  • There are several permutations in the group with both matches depending on each other; there are scenarios where Federer could win in straight sets and still be eliminated, while he could also lose in straight sets and qualify.
  • Federer has beaten Anderson in four of the five matches they have played and he has won all three matches they have contested on hard courts.

KEVIN ANDERSON

  • The confidence is coursing through Anderson after he destroyed Kei Nishikori 6-0, 6-1 on Tuesday in a match in which he barely put a foot wrong.
  • The South African has won both his games and although he is not mathematically assured of qualification, it would take a highly unlikely series of events to see him eliminated so he will play with freedom.
  • Anderson carries the memory of having beaten Federer in an epic five-setter at Wimbledon earlier this year so that should give him belief that he can make it three wins from three in the group.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

Federer will still be smarting after his defeat to Anderson in the Wimbledon quarter-finals so he will be out for revenge here, as well as a spot in the semi-finals. The Swiss looked more like his usual self against Thiem on Tuesday and now appears to have found his rhythm on court, and he will need every ounce of his talent to overcome an in-form and confident Anderson.

The South African was excellent against Nishikori but the scoreline also reflected how poor his opponent was in that match and this should be an altogether different contest against the six-time winner. Federer will give it everything and if he improves his level yet again, he could do just enough to claim the win, but whether or not that will be enough to qualify will be down to the calculators. Federer in three sets.
