Thiem kept his hopes alive with a battling three-set victory over stand-in Carreno-Busta on Wednesday and will have found some confidence from that victory after recent poor form.
Goffin has been a tough opponent for Thiem in the past as he trails the Belgian 3-6 in career meetings and 1-3 on hard courts so he is arguably the underdog here despite their world rankings.
Thiem's level of play has been more consistent than his opponent in this tournament though, and he will hope to face the Goffin who was hammered by Dimitrov rather than the one who impressively saw off Nadal.
In the most one-sided encounter of the tournament, Goffin was destroyed by Dimitrov in the second round of matches but he can still qualify for the semi-finals with a victory here.
It remains to be seen how that loss has affected his confidence but if he plays anything like he did against Nadal he will have every chance of progressing.
Goffin has the upper hand in meetings with Thiem and has come out on top in both their meetings in 2017, so his game appears to match up well with the Austrian's.
David Goffin has won six of the nine previous meetings between the two players.
David Goffin has won three of the last four meetings with Dominic Thiem.
None of the last four meetings between the two players have been decided in straight sets.
The player losing the first set has come back to win the match in two of the last three meetings between the two players.
David Goffin has won four of the five tiebreaks played against Dominic Thiem.
The only time Dominic Thiem has beaten David Goffin in four meetings on hard courts came in Marseille in 2015 when Goffin was forced to retire through injury.
Both players come into this shoot-out off the back of contrasting performances, with Thiem displaying his battling qualities in his victory over Carreno Busta whilst Goffin was easily outclassed by an inspired Dimitrov. The result of this final group game could largely depend on how Goffin responds to that defeat, as he generally has the measure of Thiem on hard courts. Assuming he plays his normal game, Goffin should edge a tight battle for the right to face Roger Federer in the semi-finals.
