THE LOWDOWN

MIKHAIL KUKUSHKIN

  • Kukushkin came through a four-set match with Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the opening round as he comes into this match with Nadal keen to equal his best performance at Wimbledon in 2014 where he reached the third round.
  • His preparations prior to Wimbledon were solid as he reached the seei-finals at Eastbourne prior in the week leading up to the tournament where he beat Kyle Edmund, before losing to Mischa Zverev.
  • Kukushkin met Nadal in the third round back in 2014 and stunned the Spaniard by taking the opening set on a tie-break, but Nadal hit back to win the next three sets with Kukushkin winning just three games over those three sets.

RAFAEL NADAL

  • The second seed cantered to victory in the first round easing past Dudi Sela in straight sets – a match which was his first on grass this year and his first since winning Roland Garros a month ago.
  • He has played Kukushkin three times including once before at Wimbledon and he has comfortably won all three matches so he will be looking to do the same and progress here.
  • Nadal has only gone past the second round twice since 2011 so there is some pressure on him this year to perform better at Wimbledon.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

Nadal eased through the opening match against Sela and he should do the same here against Kukushkin. While Nadal does not instil huge confidence when playing on grass, he should have enough in his armoury to beat Kukushkin who he has beaten here before and has a 100% winning record against.
