Taking place on the Grandstand court at Flushing Meadows this evening, (20:30 UK time), is the even-looking match between Juan Martin del Potro and Dominic Thiem.
2009 champion Del Potro has been beset with
injuries and has an inferior 2017 win-loss record compared to his opponent, but there
isn’t much between them on hard court data, with Del Potro having a 2% edge on
serve, but Thiem enjoying a 2% edge on return.
Del Potro (27%) is marginally more solid when leading by a break, but Thiem’s break deficit recovery figure this year (48%) is highly impressive and around elite level.
The Austrian also boasts a much better recent Grand Slam record, with Del Potro’s showing here this year being his best result in Grand Slams in 2017.
