Manchester United have won this competition three times before – 1968, 1999 and 2008.

This will be the fifth ever meeting between the two clubs, with the current record standing at Manchester United W1, Basel W1, D2.

The last time these two sides met ended in a 2-1 home win for Basel in the 2011/12 season, a result that saw Manchester United have to make do with dropping down to the Europa League that season.

Basel were also paired with English opposition last season in the form of Arsenal. They finished bottom of Group A with just two points to their name.

Manchester United return to the Champions League after an absence from last season’s competition, but they come this edition of the tournament as the holders of the Europa League.

United have already taken part in European competition this season as they were on the losing end of a 2-1 scoreline in the Uefa Super Cup to Real Madrid.

Basel conceded 12 goals in the group stage last season – an average of 2 goals per game.

Basel have won 20 Swiss Super League titles, including the last eight editions of the competition. In comparison, Manchester United have won 20 top flight titles in England.
