  • Jamaica head into the 2019 World Cup ranked number two in the world and they have finished fourth at the two previous World Cups in 2011 and 2015 and they will have lofty expectations in Liverpool.
  • Marvette Anderson has been named head coach of Jamaica and the strong 12-member squad includes the experienced shooting pair of Romelda Aiken and Jhaniele Fowler-Reid so they have plenty of depth and quality in their ranks.
  • Jamaica finished third at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, that included an impressive 60-55 victory over New Zealand to clinch the bronze medal and they will expect to reach the semi-finals at the very least as they aim to start with a win over Fiji.

  • Fiji finished second out of five teams at the Oceania regional qualifier to secure qualification for the Netball World Cup in Liverpool but they are in something of a group of death here as they face both Jamaica and South Africa, while Trinidad and Tobago will be tough also.
  • Fiji won one of their three group games against Zambia and they finished eleventh overall at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney but they may struggle to register a win in this first phase of the tournament.
  • Mid-court player Alesi Paul and the Rusivakula sisters, Afa and Maliana have been sidelined for disciplinary issues and were not named in the squad so preparations have hardly been ideal.

Jamaica will be heavy favourites against Fiji in their opening game of the 2019 World Cup at the M&S Banks Arena and they will be motivated to get a comfortable win under their belts in what is a difficult group. Jamaica beat Fiji 88-30 at the 2018 Commonwealth Games so expect them to easily brush aside Fiji once again and pick up the two points.
