St Helens vs Huddersfield Giants Preview

The Lowdown

  • Saints were outfought by Salford last week but they will be keen to return to winning ways in front of their home fans, but they will have to do without star hooker James Roby who will miss out with a knee complaint.
  • Roby's absence is a huge blow as he has been an ever-present all season but they can count on Theo Fages and Adam Swift who have both overcome head and arm injuries respectively to join the squad.
  • Adam Swift has handed the club a boost by signing a new two-year contract this week and he will be looking for a good performance to cap the week against a struggling Huddersfield side.

Head Coach: Keiron Cunningham

Squad: Kyle Amor, Luke Douglas, Theo Fages, Matty Fleming, Morgan Knowles, Tommy Lee, Jonny Lomax, Tommy Makinson, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Ryan Morgan, Mark Percival, Dominique Peyroux, Greg Richards, Matty Smith, Adam Swift, Zeb Taia, Adam Walker, Alex Walmsley, Jon Wilkin

Unavailable: James Roby (Knee), Danny Richardson, Calvin Wellington, Luke Thompson, Jack Ashworth, Jack Owens

  • Huddersfield have been shocking defensively in recent weeks and the 52-16 loss to Castleford last week has now seen them concede and average of 28 points per game this season which is a big reason for their struggles.
  • Influential veteran Danny Brough returns after missing the Castleford defeat due to suspension and he comes back into the 19-man squad at the expense of Ryan Brierley who drops out.
  • There are two other changes as Aaron Murphy is back from injury (although he is not certain to feature) and Nathan Mason also comes in with Daniel Smith and Gene Ormsby making way.

Head Coach: Rick Stone

Squad: Danny Brough, Paul Clough, Leroy Cudjoe, Tyler Dickinson, Dale Ferguson, Lee Gaskell, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Kruise Leeming, Nathan Mason, Jermaine McGillvary, Darnell McIntosh, Alex Mellor, Aaron Murphy, Sam Rapira, Oliver Roberts, Ukuma Ta’ai, Shannon Wakeman, Sam Wood

Unavailable: Jake Mamo (Ankle), Tom Symonds (Knee), Mikey Wood, Michael Lawrence, Ryan Brierley, Gene Ormsby, Daniel Smith

Analysis - what to expect
Huddersfield are showing no signs of halting this alarming slide in results and conceding 52 points albeit to a potent Cas side will not help their confidence. Saints do not possess anywhere near as much attacking threat as Cas do, but the return of an in-form Adam Swift, with a new contract in hand for him, should see them have enough to take all the points here.
