Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • South Africa will look to build on their solid win over Pakistan in their last Test series following their 3-0 victory as they host Sri Lanka in a two-match series and look to maintain their superb home form having won their last five series’ on home soil.

  • The Proteas have named their strongest squad available with captain Faf du Plessis back in the side after his suspension whilst the pace of Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada, who should be fresh after he was rested for the T20 series against Pakistan, should cause Sri Lanka problems.

  • South Africa have also named two youngsters in their squad who are seen as the future of cricket in the country with Zubayr Hamza given another chance after his debut against Pakistan whilst 20-year-old all-rounder Wiaan Mulder could get an opportunity.

Captain: Dimuth Karunaratne

  • Sri Lanka head to South Africa on the back of two awful performances in Australia in which they struggled badly with the bat after failing to deal with the fast tracks and pace bowling which saw them manage just 647 runs from four innings.

  • Sri Lanka have dropped captain Dinesh Chandimal with Dimuth Karunaratne taking over the captaincy for this series with Chandimal asked to play domestic cricket in a bid to regain his form following some poor efforts with the bat against Australia.

  • The pace attack of Sri Lanka is depleted with injuries to Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera but Suranga Lakmal is back whilst Oshada Fernando, Mohmed Shiraz and Lasith Embuldeniya have been named in the squad with all three hoping to earn their first cap.

Sri Lanka have it all to do as they travel to South Africa and will need a significantly improved performance following their recent shambolic trip to Australia. Sri Lanka were poor and couldn’t handle the pace of the Australians which does not bode well for them here against a potent pace attack. The Proteas have a dangerous front-line attack led by Steyn and Rabada who will relish the chance to get into the Sri Lankan batsmen having seen how they crumbled in Australia and they can be the catalyst for the win in this first Test.
