Southampton’s victory over West Brom launched them out of the relegation zone at the start of the weekend, but with them playing a day later then the majority of the teams around them, their plight could worsen by the time they square off with Liverpool at St Mary’s. Jurgen Klopp’s men were caught up in that dramatic draw with Tottenham seven days previously and the objective will be to return to winning ways and solidify their current top four berth. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs side struggled here a few weeks ago but you get the feeling that Liverpool will return to Merseyside with all three points.

The quarter-finals of the 2016 League Cup pitted Southampton and Liverpool together at St Mary’s, and although Sadio Mane would put the Saints ahead in the first minute, it was a night to forget for the home fans. That was because Liverpool then went on to score six goals. Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace for the Reds, but he was outdone by Divock Origi who himself scored a hat-trick and in turn went home with the match ball.
