Captain: Sarfraz Ahmed

  • Pakistan were stunned in the opening Test of this three-match series as complacency arguably crept into their fourth innings runs chase where they fell four runs short needing just 176 for victory after having seemingly done all the hard work.
  • It is unlikely they will make any changes to the starting line-up although they rarely do name an unchanged side so it will be interesting to see if anybody does pay the price for failure in that last Test.
  • Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali shone with the ball and they will hope Mohammad Abbas can get back to his best after looking below par in the first Test, but it seems unlikely any of the bowling unit will change as it was them that put them in such a strong position to win the game.

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • New Zealand stunned Pakistan in the first Test and it really was a testament to their attitude and character as much as their quality for how they managed to pull off that dramatic win last week.
  • Ajaz Patel was the star with the ball in the second innings and he will look to continue where he left off with something of a psychological edge over the Pakistan batsmen, but in truth the entire bowling contributed well.
  • They are highly unlikely to make any changes to the eleven after such a stunning victory but they will know that they still have plenty of room for improvement with the bat, especially as they need to convert some of their starts into big scores.

The First Test ended in drama as New Zealand clawed victory from the jaws of defeat as Pakistan looked to be cruising going into the fourth innings. Pakistan’s inability to cement their position in the match and failing to convert 20s and 30s by their batsmen cost them dearly. The bowling units are relatively well matched overall, but the key to victory will be which batting departments can maintain their concentration long enough to compile a big score. Both teams failed to do that in the opening Test and the team that does it here should emerge victorious. The short turnaround in tests may be just what Pakistan need to respond immediately and get back on track but another tight Test is in store.
