New Zealand beat Bangladesh by 9 wickets

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • New Zealand come into this three-match Test series with Bangladesh having beaten them comfortably 3-0 in the ODIs, and they will be expecting to produce a similarly dominant display in the longer format of the game now.
  • The Test squad is extremely settled in recent times and that remains the case here as the only real change has been veteran legspinner Todd Astle coming in for left arm spinner Ajaz Patel but that is the biggest change from the team that beat Sri Lanka in the last series.
  • Confidence is high within the squad as the Blackcaps have won six of their last seven Test series and Tim Southee and Trent Boult especially will be confident having excelled in the ODIs and against Bangladesh in the last series they played two years ago.

Captain: Mushfiqur Rahim

  • Bangladesh come into this Test series determined to bounce back after a hammering in the ODI series, but they are not helped by various injuries to some of their key batsmen coming into this opening Test.
  • They are expected to be without skipper Shakib Al Hasan who is recovering from a finger injury while Mushfiqur Rahim is also a major doubt with ailments of his own although there is talk that he will battle through the pain to play here.
  • That piles the pressure on their other batsmen like Tamim Iqbal and Mahmadullah but none of their batsmen have ultimately gotten to grips with the Blackcaps’ bowlers based on the ODI performances and they will have to remedy that quickly in this series.

New Zealand are coming into this Test series with plenty of confidence and a settled team, and they will have big expectations. After dominating the ODIs, they have all their key players available for this match unlike Bangladesh. With their batting line-up somewhat weakened, that does not bode well for the tourists who have struggled against the Blackcaps’ pace attack already. Expect the hosts to open up with a comfortable win.
