Leigh Centurions vs Salford Red Devils Preview

The Lowdown

  • Leigh fell to their 14th loss in their last 16 games with a defeat against Huddersfield last week, as they head into the Middle 8s short of form and confidence.
  • Jamie Acton has finally had his fate confirmed after his contrary behaviour charge was heard by the RFL. He was initially handed a nine-match ban but has had this extended to four months after his appeal was rejected. Greg Richards could make his debut after signing from St. Helens.
  • Leigh need a positive result here in order to avoid ending the regular season in bottom place but will need to improve in all areas. Their defence has been a particular concern of late, conceding an average of 35 points per game in their last six home matches.

  • Salford's defeat to Castleford last week was their fifth loss in their last six Super League games, with their place in the top 4 heading into the Super 8s potentially relying on them picking up a win in this game.
  • Ian Watson is able to recall Greg Johnson after he recovered from a knock, as well as Junior Sa'u who returns from a one-match ban. George Griffin and Josh Wood drop out of the squad.
  • Salford are strong travellers and have amassed the highest number of points per game when playing away this season (27.9 on average). If they can get near that figure it may be enough to overcome Leigh, who average 22.6 points per game at home.

Analysis - what to expect
Leigh have one last shot at trying to find some form ahead of their battle to retain their Super League status for next season. The Centurions have been poor for most of the season and have only managed to pick up five wins in their first season back in Super League. They'll be desperate to try and gain some confidence but will be up against a tough Salford outfit who are a real threat this season. They are the second highest scorers in the league as well as scoring the most points per game away from home. The Red Devils need a win here to ensure they earn an extra home game in the Super 8s and it's expected that they'll do just that.
