Leeds Rhinos vs St Helens Preview

The Lowdown

  • An emotional evening is expected at Headingley Carnegie with this being the final game before the historic South Stand is destroyed and construction begins on a new two-tier stand which will open in 2019.
  • Mitch Garbutt has been recalled to the squad following a calf injury that has ruled him out for the last two matches, although he could still be one of the two players that are cut from the 19-man squad if he fails a fitness test.
  • Ashton Golding misses out this time but Jack Walker comes into the 19-man squad as the Rhinos will be determined to bounce back following a miserable performance and defeat to West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield last week.

Head Coach: Brian McDermott

Squad: Carl Ablett, Tom Briscoe, Rob Burrow, Adam Cuthbertson, Brett Delaney, Mitch Garbutt, Ryan Hall, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Jimmy Keinhorst, Jordan Lilley, Danny McGuire, Joel Moon, Anthony Mullally, Matt Parcell, Brad Singleton, Liam Sutcliffe, Stevie Ward, Jack Walker, Kallum Watkins

Unavailable: Keith Galloway (Achilles), Josh Walters (Knee) Ash Handley (Knee), Brett Ferres (Knee), Ashton Golding

  • The Saints' recent revival was halted last week by Hull FC as they narrowly went down 8-6 but they know they have to get back to winning ways quickly if they are to have any hope of putting the top four under pressure.
  • Luke Douglas misses out once again with the Scottish international given an extra week to recover from his knee injury, so that is something of a blow to Saints coach Justin Holbrook who has praised him recently.
  • Jake Spedding drops out of the 19-man squad with Tommy Lee coming into replace him, but they are otherwise unchanged from last week with a strong set of players at Holbrook's disposal as they seek to spoil the Rhinos' party.

Head Coach: Justin Holbrook

Squad: Kyle Amor, Theo Fages, Regan Grace, Morgan Knowles, Tommy Lee, Matty Lees, Jonny Lomax, Tommy Makinson, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Ryan Morgan, Mark Percival, Dominique Peyroux, Danny Richardson, James Roby, Matty Smith, Zeb Taia, Luke Thompson, Alex Walmsley, Jon Wilkin

Unavailable: Ben Barba (Suspended), Luke Douglas (Knee), Adam Swift, Jake Spedding

Analysis - what to expect
The heavy loss last week to Wakefield was not that unusual for Leeds as they have put in the occasional woeful performance at times this season, but they have done well by responding in a positive fashion in the game immediately following such losses. They will have a tough challenge against this Saints team that is in solid form but with this match signifying the end of the South Stand and a party atmosphere expected, the Rhinos' motivation should be high and should give them the edge in a closely fought match.
