Leeds Rhinos vs Huddersfield Giants Preview

The Lowdown

  • Leeds produced a strong performance in beating Doncaster in the Challenge Cup and at the same time it afforded them the chance to rest a handful of players who have been nursing knocks in recent weeks.
  • Brad Singleton is back after suspension but they have to go without Liam Sutcliffe who is still out of action with a concussion but Ash Handley's quick recovery from injury has helped them deal with his absence well.
  • The likes of Stevie Ward, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Brett Delaney, Tom Briscoe, Anthony Mullally and Ashton Golding all come back into the squad after being rested last week against Doncaster in the 64-28 win.

Head Coach: Brian McDermott

Squad: Tom Briscoe, Rob Burrow, Adam Cuthbertson, Brett Delaney, Keith Galloway, Mitch Garbutt, Ashton Golding, Ryan Hall, Ash Handley, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Danny McGuire, Joel Moon, Anthony Mullally, Mikolaj Oledzki, Matt Parcell, Brad Singleton, Jack Walker, Stevie Ward, Kallum Watkins

Unavailable: Liam Sutcliffe (Head), Carl Ablett (Knee), Jimmy Keinhorst (Hand), Brett Ferres (Suspended), Jack Ormondroyd (Knee), Josh Walters, Jordan Baldwinson, Jordan Lilley

  • The Giants' season went from bad to worse last weekend as they were beaten by Championship side Swinton 28-24 and subsequently knocked out of the Challenge Cup in hugely disappointing fashion.
  • Coach Rick Stone is increasingly under pressure to turn things around and the continued absence of Leroy Cudjoe does not help his cause, although they have plenty of options available for this big West Yorkshire derby.
  • Ryan Brierley has left the club to join Toronto Wolfpack while Danny Brough is available after suspension once again as a number of players that were rested in the cup game all return to the 19-man squad.

Head Coach: Rick Stone

Squad: Danny Brough, Paul Clough, Matthew English, Dale Ferguson, Ryan Hinchcliffe, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Kruise Leeming, Jake Mamo, Jermaine McGillvary, Darnell McIntosh, Alex Mellor, Aaron Murphy, Adam O'Brien, Oliver Roberts, Jared Simpson, Daniel Smith, Shannon Wakeman, Mikey Wood, Sam Wood

Analysis - what to expect
On paper, this match well and truly looks like a mismatch and a comfortable home win. The Rhinos are in great form at the moment and will be well-rested coming into this game, while the Giants are struggling badly for confidence right now. The cup loss has compounded their miserable form and although they will have the added motivation of a local derby, it seems highly unlikely they will avoid anything other than a heavy loss here.
