What’s new at Kings XI Punjab coming into IPL 2019?

Kings XI Punjab have gone through more change than most IPL teams in the off-season as they changed coaching staff along with a major part of their roster. Head Coach Brad Hodge departed in August and he was replaced by Mike Hesson – a Kiwi who was up until recently head coach of the BlackCaps national team.

They decided to retain just ten players prior to the auction so their roster has seen a major overhaul. They spent big money on recruiting Sam Curran who excelled in the Big Bash while Nicholas Pooran gives them middle order firepower and a wicketkeeper. Moises Henriques, Mohammad Shami and Hardus Viljoen are experienced campaigners who should add depth to their ranks.

Who are the key players for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2019?

Many have been writing off Chris Gayle based on recent performances in some tournaments like the Bangladesh Premier League where he never really got going. That was until his stunning ODI series against England where he produced some incredible innings. The longer format does seem to suit him more these days where he can play himself in early but he remains a force in T20s and comes into the IPL in impressive form.

Talented youngsters Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Nicholas Pooran will both be key if the team is to improve this year but veteran Aussie bowler Andrew Tye is the man once again who will be vital to their hopes. He was the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 24 in his 14 games last year and he showed in the Big Bash once again that he is in good form and undoubtedly one of the best T20 bowlers in the world.

What are the question marks for Kings XI Punjab coming into IPL 2019?

The reliance on their key men is far too great and unless Gayle, LK Rahul, David Miller and Andrew Tye have superb tournaments, they lack the overall depth to make an impact once again. Their local players do not inspire great confidence and it will take some major fireworks from the Universe Boss Chris Gayle to lead them into the knockouts.

How do The Stats Zone think Kings XI Punjab will perform in IPL 2019?

Kings XI have made plenty of changes to their roster coming into this year’s tournament but the incoming players do not capture the imagination like some of the other moves made by other teams. They will surely have some great moments but ultimately it will likely end in disappointment in the group stage.
