England beat Ireland by 85 runs

Captain: William Porterfield

  • Ireland will be hoping to take advantage of facing an under-strength England side missing some of their biggest stars as they host them in Dublin in preparation for their Tri-Series with Bangladesh and West Indies.

  • The Irish are set to hand ODI debuts to Lorcan Tucker and Josh Little over the coming month and it wouldn’t be surprising to see either thrown in this contest against England to get them ready for more competitive matches.

  • Ireland have left out Simi Singh and James Cameron-Dow in favour of George Dockrell and Paul Stirling with the conditions now suiting the incoming pair whilst Peter Chase has been dropped due to his poor form recently.

Captain: Eoin Morgan

  • England begin their World Cup preparations with a one-off ODI against Ireland with some fringe players set to be given some game time as they attempt to give the selectors something to think about.

  • The main story to come from this game is the likely inclusion of Jofra Archer who will be attempting to impress on his England debut in order to try and force his way into the World Cup squad, as he comes off an excellent spell in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals.

  • Jason Roy and Mark Wood have been withdrawn from the squad initially selected for this game while Alex Hales has been dropped for disciplinary reasons as Ben Duckett, James Vince and Dawid Malan come in whilst Ben Foakes has also been added to the squad as a replacement for Sam Billings who has suffered a dislocated shoulder.

England’s World Cup preparations get underway with a trip to Dublin for a one-off contest against Ireland before they ramp things up in a series against Pakistan. With several of their big names rested for this game, it provides an opportunity for some fringe players to come into contention. One of those players is Jofra Archer who is likely to finally make his England debut after he became eligible following a reduction in the qualification period. He will be keen to make an impact on his debut to force his way into the World Cup squad and can help his side to the win comfortably here.
