All-time meetings: Kings XI Punjab W10, Rajasthan Royals W8 Last meeting: Kings XI Punjab beat Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs
THE TEAM NEWS
KINGS XI PUNJAB
Coach: Mike Hesson
Captain: Ravi Ashwin
Kings XI Punjab have lost their last two matches now which has seen them drop out of the top four places and they face the ignominy of being the first team to lose to RCB, who comfortably outscored them on Sunday to beat them by 8 wickets despite Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 99.
The supporting cast around Gayle was poor as they did not contribute enough with the bat and none of their bowlers were able to make much of an impact so that could lead to changes with Hardus Viljoen potentially returning after missing the last match through illness.
Skipper Ravi Ashwin will be under the spotlight here as he comes up against Jos Buttler for the first time since his controversial ‘mankading’ of the English batsman earlier in the tournament which sparked a collapse and helped Kings XI win that match.
Coach: Paddy Upton
Captain: Ajinkya Rahane
Rajasthan Royals pulled off an excellent win over Mumbai Indians on Saturday as they chased down 187/5, thanks in large part to Jos Buttler’s super 89 from 43 balls to win by four wickets and get their second win of IPL 2019 to keep them within touching distance of the top four.
Buttler comes into this match in terrific form and, if he needed any further motivation, he will come face-to-face with Ravi Ashwin following the controversial incident that led to his dismissal in the last time these two teams met.
The Royals decided to drop Ben Stokes after his poor run of performances for the Mumbai match and replaced him with Liam Livingstone, though his fellow Englishman could be dropped for Ashton Turner potentially here who surely deserves a chance even if his bowling may not be possible due to an ongoing shoulder problem.
There will be plenty of spice in this IPL encounter following the Buttler/Ashwin incident in the reverse fixture earlier in the tournament. Both players are so instrumental in their team’s fortunes that it is a duel which could very well decide the match. Kings XI remain hugely inconsistent in terms of results but their batsmen have been incredibly solid so far. The Royals and Buttler will have to be at their best to match them but they will feel like they should have won their last encounter had it not been for the drama. This is a match that could easily go either way however and it could once again come down to the key moments.
