All-time meetings: Delhi Capitals W9, Kings XI Punjab W14 Last meeting: Kings XI Punjab beat Delhi Capitals by 14 runs
THE TEAM NEWS
Coach: Ricky Ponting
Captain: Shreyas Iyer
Delhi Capitals’ three-match winning run came to an end on Thursday as they were outclassed by Mumbai Indians as they fell 40 runs short of the Indians’ 168/5 and they continue to struggle at home having lost three of their four matches at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
There were some question marks over their decisions with the ball as their best two bowlers on the day – Sharma and Mishra – only bowled three overs apiece despite their six overs going for a combined total of 35, and captain Shreyas Iyer will need to improve his decision making.
Colin Munro struggled once again in his second game of the campaign and he will surely rotate back out of the side as soon as Colin Ingram is available again following the birth of his child, but they will not make any rash decisions following one poor performance.
KINGS XI PUNJAB
Coach: Mike Hesson
Captain: Ravi Ashwin
This is a huge match in the context of the race for the play-off places as both these teams sit on ten points so victory in this match is vital and Kings XI will relish playing in Delhi in conditions that will suit their team arguably more than the home side.
Moises Henriques was named to play in the last game but he twisted an ankle in the warm-up against Rajasthan Royals and was forced to miss out while Mujeeb Ur Rahman is not 100% fit either so both may miss this game as Nicholas Pooran and either Andrew Tye, Sam Curran or Hardus Viljoen will start here.
The consistency of their top order has been the standout factor of their performances so far and KL Rahul, Gayle, Agarwal and Miller are looking exceptionally strong right now, while Ravi Ashwin continues to lead by example with the ball.
Delhi Capitals have enjoyed some fantastic moments in IPL 2019 but the vast majority of those have come on their travels rather than in Delhi where they have struggled on the slower tracks there. In many ways, conditions there should suit Kings XI which does not bode well for them. Both teams have similar records so far, but Kings XI have the edge in terms of consistency and they can compound the Capitals’ miseries on home turf.
