All-time meetings:
Chennai Super Kings W12, Mumbai Indians W15
Last meeting: Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by 37 runs

Coach: Stephen Fleming

Captain: MS Dhoni

  • Chennai Super Kings got back to winning ways last time out against Sunrisers Hyderabad after the rare occurrence of losing their previous two matches and a win here would seal their place in the knockout phase.

  • While a defeat would hardly be damaging for the Super Kings, they have a big rivalry with Mumbai Indians and after losing to them earlier in the tournament by 37 runs at the Wankhede, they will be determined to get one over them on home turf.

  • The pitch in Chennai was much more batting friendly last time out so it will be interesting to see if they revert to slower conditions for this match to suit their bowlers and there is every chance they will name an unchanged side for this match.

Coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • Mumbai Indians’ good run of form was halted last time out by Rajasthan Royals so they will be keen to bounce back here as defeat would put their top four place in a degree of jeopardy with just three full rounds of matches remaining in the group stage.

  • The club have moved to sign South African left-arm pace bowler Beuran Hendricks and he has joined up with the team ahead of this game but they may not throw him immediately into the side for this key match.

  • The move to bring Ben Cutting into the side has not exactly paid off as he has scored just 16 runs in three innings and he has not bowled in the last two matches so there is a chance that they bring Jason Behrendorff back into the team or potentially even Evin Lewis for this one.

The rivalry between these two teams grows every single IPL campaign and this match promises to be another fantastic encounter. Mumbai Indians have a better record than most teams against Chennai Super Kings, and they will not be daunted by the trip to Chennai where the Super Kings have a formidable record. Much remains to be seen as to how the pitch will play but if it is batting-friendly as it was in Chennai’s last game, that could very well favour Mumbai in many respects. The toss will be key and both teams will prefer to chase, and it could come down to who wins that given how evenly matched the teams are. Otherwise, urgency is marginally in favour of the Mumbai outfit and they may just edge this even if it is tough to oppose the Super Kings in Chennai.
