Coach: Stephen Fleming

Captain: MS Dhoni

  • Chennai Super Kings suffered their first loss of IPL 2019 last time out as they fell to a 37-run loss against the Mumbai Indians as their fielding let them down to a degree and their batsmen struggled against the Indians’ elite bowling attack.

  • The opening partnership continues to struggle with Rayudu especially struggling to find form as he has only managed 34 runs in his four innings and the batting overall does need to drastically improve with captain MS Dhoni being their leading runscorer with just 119 runs so far.

  • They will consider bolstering the batting line-up for this match to compete with the Kings XI’s immense firepower so that could see a first start of IPL 2019 for Faf de Plessis who has been watching on the sidelines so far while Scott Kuggeleijn is also available and he is expected to come in for Dwayne Bravo who has picked up an injury and misses out here.

Coach: Mike Hesson

Captain: Ravi Ashwin

  • Kings XI Punjab have some momentum coming into this game having won their last two matches – the last of which came against Delhi Capitals when some superb bowling and fielding sparked a collapse as they pulled off an unlikely victory after taking seven wickets for eight runs.

  • Sam Curran’s stunning hat-trick and figures of 4/11 will surely have earned him a place in the team once again here but he may drop down the batting order after opening against the Capitals as Chris Gayle should return after resting his back and missing that match.

  • That will mean one of the overseas players will have to drop out of the side and that is most likely to be Hardus Viljoen rather than Mujeeb Ur Rahman especially on the slow Chennai pitch that will favour the slow bowlers.

Chennai Super Kings have to be favoured at home against any team but there are concerns over their batting coming into this match. A low-scoring tight affair is what they seem to prefer but they will have to bat well to match the Kings XI batting line-up especially if Gayle returns. They will take heart from the fact that they have an excellent recent record against them, and they will be motivated to bounce back after their first loss last time out. Dhoni will expect and insist on a big reaction, and the hosts may just edge this one.
