Rajasthan’s bowlers had a poor match as a collective only taking the one wicket in a nine-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out with overseas bowlers Ben Laughlin and Ben Stokes having nights to forget bowling just two overs each for a total of 41 runs.
The bowlers were not totally to blame however for the disappointing opening performance as the batting group could just not get going posting a meagre 125/9 from their 20 overs on a good track. Talented young local Sanju Samson was the only player to hold his head high after scoring a well complied 49 from 42 deliveries and he was the only Royals player to pass 20.
Unfortunately for the Royals, their lack of squad depth at this stage of the tournament means they are a bit hamstrung in regards to changes to their team although Steve Smith’s replacement Heinrich Klassen could potentially come in to add to the batting depth as a possible change.
Coach: Ricky Ponting
Captain: Gautam Gambhir
Delhi will be disappointed with their first outing against the Kings XI Punjab going down comfortably by 6 wickets despite posting 166 and the struggle for Delhi was in the bowling department. They were obliterated early on by KL Rahul (51 off 16) and only captured four wickets for the innings.
Much to Ricky Pontings delight, Glenn Maxwell could make his IPL 2018 debut after missing round one. Maxwell will add some much desired fire power to the Daredevils line-up should he be available. Maxwell provides an x-factor in all facets as along with his destructive batting, he can also bowl some handy overs and is one of the world’s best fielders.
Aside from the possible inclusion of Maxwell, Delhi will not want to make mass changes ahead of their meeting with Rajasthan as Ricky Ponting will back the majority of his team once again.
Results did not pan out as either team would have liked with both going down in round one. Delhi were disappointing but not disgraced and have the talent to bounce back. Rajasthan however were completely outplayed by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The batting groups failure meant a lot of added pressure onto the bowlers resulting in a horrific nine-wicket loss. The depth of Rajasthan’s squad is a concern and they will need their core players to really step up if they are to match it with Delhi. If Delhi can tighten up their bowling performance from their last match it should see them to victory against the Royals.
