HEAD-TO-HEAD All-time meetings: Chennai Super Kings W12 Mumbai Indians W13
THE TEAM NEWS
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
Coach: Stephen Fleming
Captain: MS Dhoni
Chennai produced yet another thriller in a high scoring match against mid-table Royal Challenegrs Bangalore as they sit at the top of the ladder andn they will be looking to repeat the win over the Indians from the opening game of IPL 2018.
The batting line-up of CSK has been incredible this season. Whilst players such as Shane Watson (191 runs) and MS Dhoni (209) have been getting much of the praise for CSK’s batting performances, it is local batsman Ambati Rayudu who has dominated the competition as he has scored a league-high 283 runs from six matches with an average of 47 and a strike rate of 159.
Hard to see any changes by Chennai after another yet victory so they should go unchanged unless they look to start resting and rotating one or two players.
Coach: Mahela Jayawardene
Captain: Rohit Sharma
Mumbai produced the worst batting display of IPL 2018 after failing to chase down Hyderabad’s mediocre total of 119 and the only positive for the match was the fact they were able to restrict SRH to such a low total - a welcome change after a string of poor performances.
With the absence of the Injured Pat Cummins and Jason Behrendorff, the Mumbai bowlers have actually performed quite admirably over the course of the tournament. They currently have six players who have taken six or more wickets for 2018, the most of all teams. Leading the way still is rookie Mayank Markande, who leads Mumbai and the competition with 10 wickets and continues to impress.
You would expect at least one change for Mumbai after such a poor batting performance and Kieron Pollard is surely in line to be dropped after six matches and a poultry 63 runs. With Pollard not bowling in recent times, it may be time for Mumbai to give him a rest and bring in a proven T20 player in JP Duminy, who is yet to see any action in IPL 2018.
The last time these two met was the opening fixture of IPL 2018 with Chennai winning off of the final ball. Since that match, the two teams have gone in vastly different directions with CSK sitting at the top of the table and Mumbai in equal last which represents an astonishing fall from grace for last year’s champions. CSK are now in a routine of winning close matches and their big guns are firing on all cylinders. Mumbai seem to be out of answers and their supporters are running out of patience. The Indians have struggled all season with bat and ball and will almost need a miracle to defeat the rampaging outfit of the Chennai Super Kings.
