  • Dominic Thiem edged past Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller in a match that was interrupted several times and was played across Friday and Saturday, and the Austrian now faces the ultimate test in Nadal at Roland-Garros.
  • Thiem will be desperate to go one step further than he did last year when he also reached the final after consecutive semi-final appearances in the previous two years, but he faces the man that beat him in straight sets last year.
  • The Austrian has been one of the most consistent performers at Roland-Garros in recent years, but he will have to take his game to another level here but he will take heart from the fact that he beat Nadal recently on clay in Barcelona.

  • Rafa Nadal is bidding to win his 12th French Open title here and a third consecutive trophy as he faces Dominic Thiem – the man who he beat last year in straight sets to win his 11th on the clay at Roland-Garros.
  • Nadal’s route to the final has seen him drop just one set and that was somewhat unexpected against David Goffin in the third round, but he has been imperious since then in dispatching Juan Ignacio Londero, Kei Nishikori and Roger Federer emphatically in straight sets.
  • Nadal did face his sternest test against Federer in the semi-finals on Friday in difficult conditions and despite conceding various break points, he ultimately overpowered the Swiss maestro and comes into this final looking extremely strong.

The scene is set at Roland-Garros for Rafa Nadal to win his 12th French Open with Dominic Thiem standing in the way as he attempts to put a dent in Nadal’s love story on the Parisian clay. Thiem produced an excellent display in beating Djokovic in the semis and he will take some heart from the fact he beat Nadal in the semi-finals of the 2019 Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell in April before winning that tournament. This however will be a much tougher test as Nadal is close to his best and looking exceptional right now. Thiem has to set a marker down early otherwise Nadal could completely blow him away – much like he did in last year’s final. That will be a tough ask however as Nadal is flying right now and there is every chance this could be another straight sets win for the Mallorquin legend.
