  • Ten-time winner Rafael Nadal enters Roland-Garros as the red-hot favourite once again having been in typically devastating form during the clay court season. The Spaniard won his 11th Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open titles, and also claimed the Italian Open trophy.
  • The reigning champion's only loss on the surface this year came at the hands of Dominic Thiem at the Madrid Open, which brought to an end a winning run of winning 50 consecutive sets on the surface - a tour record.
  • Nadal leads Dolgopolov 7-2 in career meetings and has won both their meetings on clay in straight sets.

  • Dolgopolov has endured an injury-plagued 2018 to date having only competed in five tournaments and just two events since January's Australian open.
  • Both of the Ukrainian's matches on clay have resulted in first round defeats and there is little form to speak of ahead of this daunting opener against the world number one.
  • Dolgopolov has twice reached the third round in Paris but he has not reached that stage since 2011.

There is simply no case to be made for Dolgopolov here, as he enters Roland-Garros having played very little tennis in 2018 and faces a man who has only ever lost two matches at the French Open in 13 years. Nadal has been his usual irresistable self since the clay court season began and few would bet against him claiming his 17th Grand Slam title in a fortnight's time.

The reigning champion should ease through this opener with relative ease in straight sets.
