  • 36-year-old Benneteau became the oldest Frenchman to win a match at a home major by overcoming Leonardo Mayer in four sets in his first round match.
  • That was the veteran's first win at Roland Garros since 2013 with his best performance at the tournament being a quarter-final appearance way back in 2006.
  • He has already announced that this will be his final year on the tour and he will be fired up to perform in front of his home crowd.

  • Del Potro came through a difficult first round match with Nicolas Mahut, losing the first set 1-6 before recovering to win the next three and cement his place in the second round against another French opponent.
  • Clay is not the Argentine's favoured surface and this is only his second appearance at the French Open since 2012, with his career best at Roland-Garros being a semi-final appearance in 2009.
  • The world number six has faced Benneteau twice before - most recently in Basel last year - with both meetings resulting in a straight sets victory for Del Potro.

Del Potro has had a solid year so far with two titles to his name but his clay court preparation has not been ideal due to a thigh injury picked up in Rome a couple of weeks ago. His participation at Roland-Garros was in doubt but he came through a testing first round match with Mahut which leads us to believe he should be favoured here.

However, the experienced Benneteau will be playing in his last ever French Open and with the crowd behind him, he is more than capable of taking at least a set off the fifth seed.
