FPL Gameweek 8 – Team TSZ

This season, we’ve pooled our (self-proclaimed) collective genius together to form ‘Team TSZ’, a fearsome squad of fantasy point machines who will gun for glory in our very own FPL mini-league.

Decisions will be made collectively after polite discussion. ‘Team TSZ’ consists of:

Rob EstevaManaging Director

Trystan PughSports Content Manager

Tim BlackwellChief Sports Data Scientist

So how did we get on in Gameweek 7?

Last Gameweek’s Points

GW points: 78
GW average: 51
GW rank: 132,339
Overall rank: 399,069 (^)

Well, would you look at that. After meandering around in the doldrums of the 1 million mark, 'Team TSZ' flexed its wildcard-inspired muscles in GW7 with a pleasing score of 78, propelling us to the heady heights of the top 400k - a rise of almost 500k in the global rankings.

Chief among our wildcard heroes were defensive duo Tripper and Doherty, with 11 and 12-point hauls respectively, Maddison and Hazard with solid scores in midfield, and Harry Kane with a brace up top.

All-in-all, a successful wildcard. However, that hasn't stopped the office bickering. First, there was the decision to deprive Kane of the armband...

If you read last week's article, you may recall that Managing Director Rob - so often derided in this column - advocated for captaining the Spurs frontman above Aguero. Myself and Tim disagreed, and the rest was history.

That wasn't the only bone of contention though...

In a nutshell, Tim suggested last week - during our lengthy wildcard discussions - that we should opt for Trent over Tarkowski, who then proceeded to pick up an injury in GW7. With Liverpool's fixtures taking a kind turn after this weekend's top-of-the-table clash with City, I have to admit that, with hindsight, Trent was the better option.

Essentially, I was on the wrong side of the coin on both occasions last week. It's true I've oft pointed the finger at my comrades this season, but I'm not one to shy away from culpability. Everyone has off-days.

Enough self-reflection though. Let's focus on the positives; the outlook is brighter and we have risen to 33rd in the TSZ mini-league. Onwards and upwards!

Gameweek 8 Team

Formation: 3-4-3
Vice-captain: Hazard
Transfers made: 0
Point deductions: N/A
Substitutions made: 1 (Doherty > Tarkowski)

After the excitement of last week's squad overhaul, this feels a little less exciting, but you can't wildcard every week! More importantly, we're finally at a point where we're generally pleased with the lads. Morale in the dressing room is good and there aren't any ego's disrupting the atmosphere a la Paul Pogba.

On paper, we are set up nicely for GW8. We are spared the 'Kaneundrum' having already brought him in last week, so we have the luxury of sitting on our squad. With the international break coming up, we feel that being armed with two transfers is an advantage over many others. Our attention will almost certainly turn to Liverpool assets soon, but for now we are not too dismayed by the lack of red in the team.

An Aguero > Vardy move was briefly discussed - and it is certainly one that has short-term potential - but we didn't want to destabilise the balance of the squad prior to a couple of important-looking gameweeks.

Benching Doherty is a tough call given his attacking threat and Wolves' excellent form, but he could well feature anyway given the doubt surrounding Tarkowski.
