The Lowdown

RICHARD GASQUET

  • Gasquet has progressed to the third round with minimum fuss, defeating Blaz Kavcic and Lorenzo Sonego respectively in straight sets.
  • He has beaten Federer twice before but neither of those matches were played on hard courts so he will surely have to play at the very top of his game and hope the defending champion has a rare off day.

ROGER FEDERER

  • Although he came through in straight sets, Federer was given a stern test by Jan Lennard-Struff in the second round which may ultimately serve him well for the rest of the tournament.
  • His career hard court record over Gasquet is near perfect, winning all 10 matches on the surface and also 20 of the 21 sets they have played.

The Statistics

The Prediction

Gasquet has simply had no answer to Federer on hard courts in the past, with a 2006 meeting in Canada being the last and only time he has claimed a set off the Swiss great on this surface. Although he has outclassed his opponents in the first two rounds, there is little to suggest the Frenchman can spring a surprise here, particularly as Federer has looked in excellent form so far in Melbourne. A straight sets victory for the defending champion is in the offing.
