Captain: Tim Paine

  • Australia come into this series against Sri Lanka with relatively low confidence having lost the recent series against India which ended 2-1 but the hosts were essentially outplayed by a much greater margin in the play and they will look to bounce back and regain some confidence and form here.
  • The Aussies look to be using this Test to give an opportunity to some new faces with Kurtis Patterson being called up after the squad was already announced and he will start this match at number six while Joe Burns has been named as Marcus Harris’ opening partner with Aaron Finch dropping out of the reckoning.
  • The bowling unit also sees promising pace bowler Jhye Richardson come into the side and he will be looking to continue his good form from the ODI series with India and he gets the nod over veteran Peter Siddle here as the Aussies look at blooding some new faces in Brisbane.

Captain: Dinesh Chandimal

  • Sri Lanka come into this series following a home Test series whitewashing against England and a narrow defeat in New Zealand so their form is not particularly good and they continue to have plenty of issues off the pitch which is arguably affecting their performance and preparation.
  • The squad does not look too dissimilar to the one that played in New Zealand and showed greater character and fight than they produced at home to England before that, and they will need their batsmen to step up once again and show plenty of grit.
  • Speed merchants Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara will enjoy the conditions in Brisbane which should favour the fast bowlers although it can often take some time for tourist bowlers to adapt to finding the right line and length.

Australia will see this match and series as one which they will be desperate to get back on track after their struggles against India. Both teams are rotating their packs and Australia and making more changes than the tourists, but the one constant in the hosts’ team is the likes of Cummins, Starc and Lyon that should expose this fragile Sri Lanka batting order. Australia’s batting may have one or two issues themselves and Sri Lanka’s bowlers could cause them some trouble, but ultimately the hosts have the greater quality and will relish the conditions in Brisbane to kick this series off with a win.
