The Lowdown

  • Federer won all three round-robin games as he eased through the Boris Becker Group, the most recent of which was a professional performance against Cilic.
  • The six-time champion is heavy favourite to lift the ATP World Tour Finals trophy come Sunday, which would bring him within touching distance of the world number one ranking.
  • Federer has defeated Goffin in all six of their previous encounters, the most recent being the Basel indoor semi-finals last month.

  • Goffin bounced back from his heavy loss to Dimitrov by defeating Thiem in the final round-robin decider, earning him a semi-final spot in his (full) debut year at the 02.
  • The Belgian chose to mix up his tactics against Thiem, taking pace off his groundstrokes in order to extract errors from his Austrian opponent, but facing Federer is a different proposition.
  • Having never beaten the 19-time Grand Slam champion, Goffin can only hope that he plays at the very top of his game combined with an off-day for Federer.

The Statistics

The Prediction

In overcoming Thiem, Goffin should be commended for the way he responded to the heavy Dimitrov defeat, but here he faces an opponent who seems destined to finish off his fairy tale 2017 in style. Goffin has only taken two sets of Federer in six previous meetings, and so it is difficult to see anything other than a straight sets victory for the Swiss maestro.
