Afghanistan beat Ireland by 81 runs

Captain: Asghar Afghan

  • Afghanistan come into this series with Ireland with high hopes of establishing themselves further in the international arena and they will look to build on their seven-match winning streak in T20 internationals here.
  • They have all their big names at their disposal for this series as they are able to count upon Hazratullah Zazai, Asghar Afghan, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi and while they have yet to play together in 2019, their key men have been playing in domestic T20 tournaments around the world.
  • While there are some experiments in terms of selection for the Test match which will be played after T20s and ODIs, this T20 squad is tried and trusted, so they will be confident of extending their seven-match winning streak against Ireland.

Captain: Paul Stirling

  • Ireland come into this series in Northern India to face Afghanistan off the back of the Quadrangular T20 series where they beat Netherlands and Oman but narrowly lost to Scotland so they have had some good competitive action in the build up to this.
  • With regular skipper Gary Wilson unavailable due to injury, Paul Stirling takes charge of the team for this series also and he will be a key figure with the bat for them and the one player who has plenty of experience of facing the likes of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi.
  • Afghanistan played three T20 internationals in Dehradun against Bangladesh last summer and won all three of those matches with Rashid Khan particularly enjoying the conditions and he will surely be a key man for them here.

Ireland come from a quadrangular series in Oman where they played reasonably well to warm up for this series against Afghanistan but there are a number of factors against them here. Conditions will suit spin bowlers much more than in Oman where they played on relatively friendly pitches to the batsmen. Additionally, Afghanistan mark a notable increase in quality of opponent and they have lost their last seven matches against them. Conditions certainly favour the Afghans who should be able to extend their winning run in this format of the game.
