All-time meetings: David Gilbert 0-3 Kyren Wilson
Previous meeting: David Gilbert 7-9 Kyren Wilson

  • David Gilbert put out the reigning world champion Mark Williams 13-9 in a strange match in which Williams took himself to A&E overnight for chest pains but was cleared play the final session.
  • The nature of Gilbert’s match with Williams means it is still a fantastic victory for him, and yet another shock in this year’s World Championship, but leaves us with less of an idea as to how well he will fare here.
  • 37-year-old Gilbert has faced his quarter-final opponent Kyren Wilson thrice before, losing all three, with an overall 9-17 deficit in frames played between them.

  • Kyren Wilson played out an entertaining match with Barry Hawkins in the round of 16, drawing level with the left-hander at 11-11 before winning the final two frames resolutely.
  • Breaks of 125 and 132 in the 27-year-old’s final two frames against Barry Hawkins depict a talented player with a cool head who looks like a dark horse for the tournament now.
  • Wilson has never lost to David Gilbert in three previous meetings and most recently beat the 37-year-old to win the 2019 German Masters in a close match that promises a spectacle here.

David Gilbert’s win over reigning champion Mark Williams is only the third biggest shock of the tournament, which says a lot about the entertainment factor at this year’s World Championship. However, Kyren Wilson is a stony-faced challenger who has looked ruthless in his matches so far at the Crucible, and has never lost to Gilbert. It should hopefully be a close-run thing, but Wilson looks good to reach the quarter-finals for the fourth year running.
