All-time meetings: Peter Wright 15-8 Michael Smith
Previous meeting: Peter Wright beat Michael Smith 6-5

  • Peter Wright started his 2019 Premier League campaign with a 6-6 draw against Rob Cross on night one in Newcastle. It was the only match on the night where both players finished the game with an average of over 100.
  • In the encounter against Cross, Snakebite recovered from a sluggish start where he was averaging 87 at 3-1 down to eventually take the lead. He went on to miss a dart at double 18 at the end of a 116 checkout which would have seen him win the match 7-5.
  • Last Saturday he reached the semi-finals at the first Players Championship tournament of the year. On his way to the final four he won 6-5 in a very high-calibre match against Michael Smith where they both averaged in excess of 110.

  • Michael Smith lost 7-5 against defending Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen last Thursday night on night one in a rematch of the recent PDC World Championship final.
  • Despite averaging around ten points less than his opponent, Bully Boy managed to stay in touch with MVG throughout the match. Van Gerwen sealed victory with an 11-darter on the Smith throw in the last leg of the game.
  • Smith produced three averages of over 100 during his run to the quarter-finals in last Saturday’s Players Championship tournament. In the last eight he led 5-2 against Peter Wright only to lose four legs in a row to bow out of the tournament 6-5 despite a match average of over 112. In the Players Championship tournament on Sunday he lost disappointingly in round one to Keegan Brown.

If this match is anything like their encounter last Saturday in Wigan at Players Championship 1 when they both averaged over 110 in a match that went all the way to a deciding leg, then we are surely in for a treat! On that occasion it was Snakebite who came out on top, thus claiming his third consecutive win against Smith, and his second in 2019, having also defeated Bully Boy at the recent Masters tournament. Smith’s last victories against Wright were in the 2018 Premier League where he demolished Snakebite 7-1 in both of their meetings.

After an underwhelming finish to 2018, Peter Wright has shown some good signs early on in 2019 with two semi-final appearances from three tournaments, and his display against Cross in the final nine legs of their match last Thursday was very good quality. Smith wasn’t at his best against Van Gerwen last week but deserves credit for staying in the match. He is unlikely to be perturbed by losing his last three matches against Wright.

This could very well be a very tight tussle that goes all the way to the 12th and final leg with nothing between them at the end of it.
