All-time meetings:
Nathan Aspinall 1-4 Michael Smith
Previous meeting: Michael Smith 6-3 Nathan Aspinall

  • Nathan Aspinall takes to the stage in what is his first match since winning his first major televised title at the UK Open in Minehead at the start of March where he started the tournament at odds of 125/1. The Asp claimed the title in style with a 170 checkout against Rob Cross in the final.
  • He features here as one of the nine replacements for Gary Anderson after a run to the semi-finals at the 2019 World Championship catapulted him into the spotlight and his appearance as a ‘contender’ in the 2019 Premier League came as a result of that run at Alexandra Palace.
  • It was Michael Smith who ended Aspinall’s run at the 2019 World Championship. Smith won three sets in a row to win the game 6-3 after Aspinall had recovered from losing the opening two sets (and indeed the opening seven legs of the match) to level the match at three sets each.

  • Michael Smith has won only one of his opening five Premier League matches of the 2019 season and sits only one point and one place above the elimination zone.
  • Last week he was beaten 7-3 by Rob Cross despite posting an average of over 100 for the first time in the 2019 Premier League. He was unfortunate to come up against an opponent in tremendous form, with Cross averaging 103.96 and allowing Smith only five darts at the outer ring in the whole match.
  • Despite Smith’s lowly position in the league table, he actually tops the standings for most 180s in the tournament with a total of 18.

This is an intriguing match to start the evening with recent UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall full of confidence and having no real pressure facing Michael Smith who is really in need of wins to ease concerns of elimination. There have been some excellent performances from the ‘contenders’ who have been brought in to replace Gary Anderson and one would expect Aspinall to rise to the occasion also. He looks comfortable on the big stage and will relish the chance to showcase his ability in front of a big crowd.

When they met back in late December in the semi-finals at the World Championship it was a high-quality encounter with Smith just having enough quality to pull away from his tenacious opponent. Although Smith hasn’t consistently hit the heights since that tournament, he impressed in his run to the semi-finals at the UK Open and didn’t play badly in defeat against Cross last week. It’s going to be a tough game for Smith but he can ease his elimination fears with a hard-fought win against the rising star from Stockport.
