meetings: Michael van Gerwen 55-15 Peter Wright (2 draws)
Previous meeting: Michael van Gerwen 6-5 Peter Wright

  • Michael van Gerwen’s hopes of finishing at the top of the Premier League table for the seventh consecutive year are out of his own hands after his disappointing defeat against Daryl Gurney in Manchester where he recorded an average of 95.22 – his second lowest average of the 2019 Premier League season.
  • The setback against Gurney means that MVG starts week 15 in second place, one point behind Rob Cross. Even two wins from his final two matches would not be enough if Cross defeats Mensur Suljovic and James Wade in his last two matches of the league phase.
  • Van Gerwen was in dominant form again on the PDC tour last weekend with victory at the Austrian Darts Open – it was his third tournament victory over the last three weekends.

  • Peter Wright is out of contention for a play-off place. He has lost each of his last four Premier League matches and in total has won only two of his 14 previous matches in the 2019 Premier League campaign.
  • Last Thursday night he produced another disappointing performance when losing to Mensur Suljovic – Wright’s average of 89.49 was his fifth average of under 90 during the current Premier League campaign.
  • Despite his indifferent form he pushed Van Gerwen hard during their quarter-final meeting at the Austrian Darts Open on Sunday when he just lost out in a last-leg decider to MVG who then went on to win the tournament.

Michael van Gerwen will have been massively disappointed to lose top spot in the league table after his lacklustre display against Daryl Gurney last week. He brushed aside the dissatisfaction by winning yet another tournament and will be focused on keeping the pressure on Rob Cross going into the final week. The end of the Premier League season surely can’t come soon enough for Peter Wright who has produced too many poor performances to suggest he was ever going to be a serious contender to make the play-offs. Peter Wright has tasted success before against Van Gerwen in the Premier League – including back-to-back wins in the 2018 Premier League – but he is not showing any signs that he can topple MVG on the big stage right now. Expect a routine win for the world number one.
