All-time meetings
: Michael van Gerwen 18-3 Daryl Gurney (1 draw)
Previous meeting: Daryl Gurney 11-9 Michael van Gerwen

  • Michael van Gerwen ended a two-match winless run by defeating Gerwyn Price 7-2 last Thursday in Nottingham. He is the current league leader, sitting ahead of Rob Cross on legs won against the throw.
  • Although Van Gerwen’s win against Price was convincing in terms of scoreline, it wasn’t a great performance as the world number one averaged 96.07 and was grateful that Price missed chances to win four legs where he’d had the first attempt at a double.
  • Since winning the World Championship, he has averaged under 100 in six of 11 televised matches. Prior to that, he had averaged over 100 in 12 consecutive televised matches.

  • Daryl Gurney came back from 6-3 down to salvage a much-needed point against Peter Wright last week. He went into that match on the back of consecutive defeats of 7-1 and 7-0 and the point he picked up moved him three points clear of Raymond van Barneveld and the elimination zone.
  • The concern for Gurney in his performance against Wright will again have been his finishing; he had a checkout percentage of only 30% and his success rate of 36.23% on the doubles during the tournament is way behind the rest of the field.
  • He enjoyed an excellent run to the final of a ranking tournament last Saturday at Players Championship 7 in what was his first appearance in a final since winning the Players Championship Finals last November.

Michael van Gerwen is the league leader but is not showing a consistent level of form right now although a lower level of performance from MVG is often still higher than most players' regular game. The world number one was beaten by Daryl Gurney the last time they met in November in the final of the Players Championship Finals but Gurney hasn’t hit the same heights since that tournament and has a lot of improving to do if he is to repeat the feat. The run to a ProTour final last weekend will have done Gurney’s confidence the world of good but he is still not playing well enough to stop Van Gerwen taking the two points.
