All-time meetings:
Michael Smith 6-27 Michael van Gerwen
Previous meeting: Michael van Gerwen 7-5 Michael Smith

  • Michael Smith is eighth in the league table and is three points adrift of the play-off places following his 7-7 draw against Peter Wright last Thursday night in Belfast. Smith was punished for missed doubles as he lost four legs in which he’d had an attempt at a double.
  • Despite the missed opportunities Smith still averaged over 100 for the first time in the 2019 Premier League – his final match average was 100.78.
  • Smith posted four ton plus averages on his way to the final of Players Championship 9 on Saturday where he eventually lost 8-2 to James Wade. It was his first appearance in a final since losing the World Championship final to Van Gerwen at the start of 2019.

  • Michael van Gerwen lost the top spot in the league table to Rob Cross after a 7-7 draw against Gerwyn Price on night ten in Belfast. Van Gerwen now trails Cross by one point in the standings.
  • Although failure to win against Price will have been a disappointment, the way in which he recovered to take a point from the fixture will have pleased the world number one. He trailed 5-1 and survived two match darts in the final leg before taking out an 82 finish to snatch a point.
  • His average of 102.32 against the Welshman is his third highest average of the 2019 Premier League season – Van Gerwen has a tournament average of 100.49.

Michael Smith’s 2019 Premier League campaign has been a struggle. There have been signs of an improvement in form from the St. Helens man in the past few weeks but a failure to pick up points will have been a big frustration, and defeat here would leave him with much to do to keep his play-off hopes alive. Michael van Gerwen has shown he is not invincible, with three wins from his last seven Premier League matches, but in fairness his performance levels have still been excellent by most people’s standards and as he showed against Price his fighting spirit is immense. Michael Smith has the game to push Van Gerwen but he has lost all of his previous five Premier League matches against the reigning Premier League champion, and that number is likely to rise to six after this match.
