THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time meetings:
Mensur Suljovic 9-6 Michael Smith
Previous meeting: Mensur Suljovic 7-2 Michael Smith

MENSUR SULJOVIC

  • Mensur Suljovic maintained his push for a play-off place by defeating Daryl Gurney 8-5 last Thursday night in Cardiff. Suljovic is outside the top four on leg difference only and has now won five of his last seven Premier League matches.
  • Suljovic’s average of 92.45 against Gurney was his fifth consecutive average of under 94 in the Premier League – in the first seven rounds of the 2019 Premier League he averaged over 94.5 in all seven.
  • Over the Easter weekend he reached the quarter-finals of the German Darts Grand Prix where he was defeated 6-5 by Rob Cross.

MICHAEL SMITH

  • Michael Smith’s chances of making the top four are virtually over following his defeat against Gerwyn Price in Cardiff – he is six points adrift of the play-off places with only four matches to play.
  • Despite defeat against Price he averaged 99.11, making it four Premier League matches in a row where he has averaged over 99 or above and failed to win.
  • Smith lost 6-0 to Ricky Evans in the last 32 of the German Darts Grand Prix on Sunday whilst averaging a mere 84.27 during the defeat.

THE PREDICTION

Mensur Suljovic has been picking up wins over the past few weeks without particularly playing as well as he was early in the campaign, where he was playing to a higher standard but coming up against opponents who raised their level. Five wins in his last seven matches have really put the Austrian into the play-off mix and a win here would strengthen his position further. Michael Smith has improved his scoring consistency over his last four matches but his form on the doubles has been lacking which means he is well adrift of the top four. Although Suljovic is higher than Smith in the league table and has been picking up wins, Smith has been playing well enough to suggest that if he improves on his doubling then the wins may come, and it is the St. Helens man who is tipped to come out on top in this match.
