All-time meetings:
James Wade 5-4 Daryl Gurney
Previous meeting: James Wade 7-0 Daryl Gurney

  • James Wade is fourth in the league table but has now won only one of his last five Premier League matches having won three of his opening five of the campaign.
  • Last week in Belfast he produced a poor performance in losing 8-6 to Mensur Suljovic, his average of 85.76 against the Austrian was around 10 points worse off than his previous lowest average in the 2019 Premier League.
  • The Machine comes into this match having won a ranking tournament last Saturday, defeating Michael Smith 8-2 in the final of Players Championship 9, in what was his first tournament win since his victory at the World Series of Darts finals in November 2018.

  • Daryl Gurney saw his winning streak ended by Rob Cross in Belfast last week when he was defeated 8-4 by the current league leader. Gurney had won three consecutive matches prior to his loss against Voltage.
  • The Northern Irishman won the opening leg against the throw but thereafter he struggled to find form and Cross was very impressive in posting an average of 104.71.
  • Despite that defeat Gurney is only outside the top four, on leg difference behind James Wade, and is only one point adrift of third-placed Mensur Suljovic.

Fourth-placed James Wade and fifth-placed Daryl Gurney are level on points in the table so there is plenty at stake in this encounter, especially as they are both coming off disappointing results in Belfast last week. When they last met on night five James Wade won 7-0, but it is extremely unlikely that we will get a repeat of that result in this match as since then Gurney has improved his form massively, and a recent tournament win on the Euro Tour shows this. Wade brushed off his disappointment in defeat last Thursday by winning a tournament on Saturday and the majority of his performances during the 2019 Premier League have been excellent. With both players in similar form it seems there will not be much to separate the two players and we could well see a 7-7 draw as the outcome in this match.
