GERWYN PRICE

  • Welshman Gerwyn Price is appearing in his second successive Premier League campaign having made his debut in 2018 when he was eliminated after nine matches with just two points to his name.
  • The highlight of Price’s career so far came in November 2018 when he won the Grand Slam of Darts title with a 16-13 victory over Gary Anderson in the final. Since then he has been fined £21,500 and given a suspended three-month ban for his behaviour during the tournament.
  • Last weekend at the Masters he lost 10-7 to James Wade in the first round, meaning he has now lost in three consecutive matches since winning at the Grand Slam.

DARYL GURNEY

  • Daryl Gurney returns to the Premier League for the second time having given a very good account of himself on his debut last season when he finished in fifth place. During the 2018 Premier League campaign he suffered only four defeats from his 16 matches – his only losses came against the four players who finished above him in the league table (Van Gerwen, Smith, Anderson and Cross).
  • Gurney captured his second major PDC ranking title last November when he defeated Michael van Gerwen in the final of the Players Championship Finals at Minehead.
  • Since that triumph he exited the World Championship in the last 32 to Jamie Lewis and also lost 10-8 to Dave Chisnall in the first round at the Masters last weekend, despite having led 6-2.

THE PREDICTION

These two players were Premier League newcomers last year and they have certainly earned their return to the event having won big ranking tournaments during 2018 with Price lifting the Grand Slam title and Gurney claiming the Players Championship Finals trophy.

After his recent fine and warning, Price will certainly have to be careful not to overstep the mark with his celebrations and there is a feeling that could have some negative affect on his game – not to mention that the crowd will be on his back, booing him at every opportunity. All of that may give Gurney some advantage, though he does not have a good record against Price with only one win from their previous nine encounters and this may play on his mind, especially as he let a 5-1 lead slip against the Welshman in their last Premier League encounter in which they drew 6-6. Good runs do come to an end however, and Gurney is tipped to take the two points in this match.
