THE LOWDOWN

HEAD-TO-HEAD
All-time
meetings: Daryl Gurney 4-7 Michael Smith (1 draw)
Previous meeting: Michael Smith 10-9 Daryl Gurney

DARYL GURNEY

  • Daryl Gurney is in with a chance of making the top four, though he could make or miss out on the play-offs regardless of whether he wins, draws or loses this match. With so much depending on results elsewhere too, he is only behind fourth-placed Mensur Suljovic on legs won against the throw and ahead of sixth-placed Gerwyn Price by one point.
  • Gurney has lost only twice during his last ten Premier League matches, and last week in Sheffield he survived a missed match dart from Gerwyn Price to earn what could prove to be a very precious point.
  • At last weekend’s European Darts Grand Prix, he lost in the last 16 to UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall in a high-quality match where both players averaged over 101.

MICHAEL SMITH

  • Michael Smith is seventh in the league table; it is the highest position that he can finish but a win for Peter Wright earlier in the evening would see Smith slip into eighth place ahead of his match against Gurney.
  • Smith is without a win during his last seven Premier League matches, although last week he came back from 7-5 down to pick up a point against James Wade. Smith had led 4-2 earlier in the game, though missed a number of chances over the next few legs which meant he failed to establish further control.
  • He was defeated at the last 16 stage on Sunday at the European Darts Grand Prix by rising Dutch star Jeffrey de Zwaan who averaged almost 106 with just two missed double attempts.

THE PREDICTION

There are quite a few permutations for Daryl Gurney but the bottom line is that if he wins this match then only a win for Mensur Suljovic against Michael van Gerwen would deny him a place in the top four. Gurney has proven to be very hard to beat having lost only two of his last ten Premier League matches but the stakes are higher than ever now and the pressure is certainly cranked up as was shown in his fiery exchange with Gerwyn Price after their match last week. Michael Smith has not performed to his expected level during the campaign and it is his finishing which has been the big let-down over the last few weeks. The fact Smith tops the 180 scoring charts despite his position shows how well he has been scoring. It is unlikely that Smith will roll over for Gurney and this should be a very competitive match. Smith showed enough against James Wade last week to suggest he is going to battle and he might just do Gurney’s play-off rivals a favour by snatching a win against the Northern Irishman.
