THE LOWDOWN

SCOTLAND

  • Scotland scored five tries to earn a bonus-point win over Italy at Murrayfield by a score of 33-20 to get their Six Nations off to the best possible start
  • Wing Blair Kinghorn scored a hat-trick in a match that Scotland were disappointed not to have won by more points, and they were 33-3 up before falling apart defensively
  • Scotland made rotations in the final moments of their match with the Italians that raise questions about their strength in depth, although Kinghorn became the first Scot to score a Six Nations hat-trick after replacing first-choice wing Sean Maitland

IRELAND

  • Ireland were shell-shocked by an emphatic England win at the Aviva Stadium, the first time they have lost in Dublin in six years
  • Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt called the defeat a “reality check” as they were out-thought in key areas and too reliant on a kicking game they rarely executed well enough.
  • A trio of Ireland first-teamers are injury doubts for the Scotland match as CJ Stander and Keith Earls were both forced off the pitch against England and Toner has an ankle issue

THE PREDICTION

You can be sure that Joe Schmidt will be sending out a completely different Ireland side to face Scotland, as they have lost their most difficult test already at home to England. Scotland are a side who can pull off the odd freak result, and especially at Murrayfield where the atmosphere is special, but their squad is seriously damaged by injuries. This will be a match full of the highest emotions, but Ireland’s defence of their Six Nations has to start here by beating the Scots in a defensive game.
