Paul Nicholson 6-5 Kevin Burness

  • Paul Nicholson is looking to improve on his previous best at the World Championship this year, having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2009.
  • World number 63 Nicholson has had a tough few years - he has qualified for only three majors over the last three years - having won the Players Championship Finals in 2010.
  • Nicholson made his return to the European Championship this year and gave a good account of himself against top-seed Michael van Gerwen, opening with back to back 12 darters and a 127 checkout on the bullseye but, after missing the opportunity to go 3-2 up, failed to win another leg and eventually lost 6-2.

  • Kevin Burness is competing at the PDC World Championship for the first time in his career, with his previous best result at a major coming in the WDF World Cup Singles in 2013 where he reached the quarter-finals.
  • Northern Ireland’s Burness recently won the Tom Kirby Memorial Trophy where he beat world number 78 and two-time winner Mick McGowan 6-3 in the final.
  • World number 151 Burness has achieved his highest eve world rankings this year with a string of good performances, and will be looking to continue his good form at the World Championship.

With the prospect of a match against two-time world champion Gary Anderson in the next round, both these men will be itching to advance to round two. While Burness is making his debut at the PDC World Championship, Nicholson has competed at them regularly and even reached the quarter-finals in 2009. Look for the man from Newcastle to advance to face Anderson.
