THE LOWDOWN

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN

  • Van Gerwen continued his quest for a third world title with a comfortable 5-1 victory over surprise quarter-finalist Ryan Joyce.
  • The Dutchman has averaged over 100 in all his matches so far and has dropped just four sets in total but this semi-final against long-time rival Gary Anderson will be his toughest test to date.
  • Van Gerwen has won seven of the ten meetings between the pair in 2018 and has won twice as many matches against Anderson than he has lost in his career (36-18).

GARY ANDERSON

  • Anderson delivered a performance full of heavy scoring and clinical finishing in his 5-2 win against Dave Chisnall in the quarter-finals as he hit 12 180s and hit 55.88% of his doubles in his best display of the tournament.
  • The Flying Scotsman will be appearing in his fourth World Championship semi-final in the last five years and one of those semi-finals (2015) saw him record a 6-3 victory over Van Gerwen.
  • Anderson has been playing through the pain barrier as a back problem continues to trouble him but it has not appeared to have affected his darts so far.

THE PREDICTION

Two double world champions meet in a mouthwatering clash on Sunday evening as the two best players in the world vie for a place in the final. The pair have met twice before at Alexandra Palace - with one win apiece - and they have both mopped up the majority of tournaments in 2018 so this should be a real crowd-pleaser.

A fast-paced, high-scoring affair appears a certainty here as they often bring out the best in each other, but it is world number one Van Gerwen who is just favoured to edge it, as his tournament statistics are superior in most departments to Anderson.
