Michael van Gerwen beat Michael Smith 10-8

  • Van Gerwen reached his fourth PDC World Darts Championship final with a resounding 6-1 victory over rival Gary Anderson and the Dutchman will look to reclaim the title he last won in 2017.
  • MVG has been the most consistent player in the tournament as he has averaged over 100 in every match; the Green Machine averaged 104.76 and hit 50% of his doubles in Sunday's semi-final.
  • As he does with most players, the world number one dominates this rivalry as he has won 25 of their 31 meetings, and Smith's quick throw plays into the Dutchman's hands as it allows him to find his rhythm.

  • Smith reached his first world final by seeing off surprise package Nathan Aspinall in Sunday's semi-final but he was made to work hard for his victory against an inspired opponent.
  • The St Helen's thrower averaged 105.22 in his win which is one of the highest of the tournament and he will need to be just as good, if not better, if he is to upset the world number one.
  • Bully Boy has already faced off against MVG in a major final this year, losing 11-4 in the Premier League, but their most recent meeting was a narrow 10-8 loss for Smith in the Grand Slam of Darts.

This should be a fitting finale to the PDC World Darts Championship as the two players with the highest tournament average meet. Both players were excellent in their respective semi-final wins and Smith in particular has really stepped up to the plate at Alexandra Palace this time around after years of disappointment. Van Gerwen, as we know, has been here before and is now seeking a third world crown.

Van Gerwen often hits his best form when he's up against quick players, and that is reflected in his dominance over Smith when the two have met in the past. Smith, though, has gone up a gear in this tournament and will not fear the Dutchman, but the nod has to go to the best player in the world to reclaim his World Championship trophy.
