THE LOWDOWN

DARYL GURNEY

  • Two-time major winner Daryl Gurney carries a great deal of confidence into his opener after claiming the Players Championship Finals title just last month.
  • Gurney reached the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace in 2017 but disappointingly crashed out at the second round stage last year to John Henderson so he will be determined to avoid a repeat here.
  • Despite his Players Championship Finals success, 2018 has not quite been as consistent a year as 2017 was for the Northern Irishman but he is ranked fifth in the PDC Order of Merit and is seen as one of the contenders for the title.

ROSS SMITH

  • Ross Smith sneaked into the draw on account of his performances on the PDC Pro Tour this year and delivered a solid performance in his opening round win over veteran Paul Lim.
  • Smith is making his second appearance at the PDC World Darts Championship having previously competed in 2014 where he was a first round loser to Simon Whitlock.
  • Smith is tied 2-2 in career meetings with Gurney and his two defeats were by a single leg so he will feel he can compete with the world number five.

THE PREDICTION

Gurney's prospects at the worlds this year are looking much brighter after he claimed the Players Championship Finals title last month and he will be feeling good about his game after some dips in form throughout the season. Smith averaged over 90 in his first round victory over Paul Lim but he will likely need to improve on that in order to trouble two-time major winner Gurney.

There have been some big-name casualties already in the tournament and Gurney will be all too aware of that, but he has the greater experience in front of the big crowds and that should see him through in relatively comfortable fashion.
